Rick and Morty’s search for the meaning of life

It is a question which flakes our minds from time to time, and nobody, no matter how inapt to their beliefs has definitive answers to the questions of existence.

Is life just a game where we make up the rules While we’re searching for something to say Or are we just simple spiralling coils Of self-replicating DNA?

Our own belief’s plagues our decisions daily, echoing through our evaluations of right and wrong, worthy and mundane, but is nor definite nor consistence to even ourselves.

In a video uploaded by Adult Swim, co-creator of Rick and Morty, Dan Hammond, takes a deep dive into his animated show’s hidden obsession with the meaning of life and his own philosophy behind the age old question.

“Do I agree with Rick that nothing means anything? No I do not because the knowledge that nothing matters gets you nowhere.”

The show’s main character Rick Sanchez takes a strong meaningless stance on the value of life (mostly that of human life), continuously dismissing vocally its value or impact on the ‘bigger picture’.

On the contrary, sprinkled throughout the show are glimpses of Dan’s personal philosophy.

“We have this fleeting chance to participate in an illusion called ‘I love my girlfriend’ [and] ‘I love my dog’… how is that not better.”

“Once you get through that terrifying threshold of accepting that, then every place is the centre of the universe and every moment is the most important moment”

“…and everything is the meaning of life”
